William Devine Hart (1918-1994)

William Devine Hart , son of George Russell Hart (1878-1954) and Mary Clelland Donald Hart (1890-1935), was born in 1918 in Paisley. His parents had been married in Hamilton where Mary lived at 21 Union Street in 1907. William is believed to have had 2 adult brothers and a sister - one brother was certainly named John Russell.

A search through Scottish statutory birth records reveals an Annie Knox Russell Hart born in 1917 and an Annie Law Russell Hart in 1916. A George Russell Hart was also born in 1913. It is therefore almost certain that these individuals were William's elder siblings.

William lived in the tenements flats at 16 King Street in Paisley when young. The property remains inhabited and in good condition to this day. Williams's father lived a comparatively long life but his mother Mary died aged 46 on the 2nd February 1935 in the Glasgow Western Infirmary due to meningitis.

William, more generally known as "Willie" Hart, worked in demanding physical jobs all his life and was noted for his exceptional strength and large hands.

William and Agnes Brodie Hart (1915-1993) were married on 28th February 1955 in Paisley and lived with their sons and daughters for many years at 69 High Street Paisley. As noted elsewhere in this site, an earlier and famous Hart family lived almost directly their tenement flat, over a hundred years previously.

Despite being colour-blind, William was an excellent snooker player, playing to a high standard against his grandson Kevin at the Paisley High Street Leisureland Club in his latter years.

The "Devine" in William's name derived from a William Devine who was the 2nd husband of William's grandmother on his mother's side - Sarah Douglas Donald Devine. William remained fully active until he passed away suddenly in 1994 whilst heading to a local dance with a friend.
