Thomas Whiteford (1812-1875)
Thomas Whiteford,
was born in Country Antrim, Ireland in 1812. Thomas married
Janet Walker who was also from County Antrim
and together they had at least 8 children who are known to include the undernoted. All of the children
born after 1850, were born in Renfrew, with pre-1850 offspring births occurring in
County Antrim. The first-born Margaret noted below is "Maggie" Whiteford Davanna described
separately in this site.
- Margaret Whiteford (1834-1914)
- Thomas Whiteford (1837-tbc)
- James Whiteford (1840-1870)
- Mary Whiteford (1845-tbc)
- Janet Whiteford (1848-1927)
- Andrew Whiteford (1852-tbc)
- Agnes Whiteford (1854-1855)
- Helen Whiteford (1856-tbc)
Examination of the Scottish Census records reveals that Thomas lived with his family at
Manse Street In Renfrew through the period 1851-1861. By 1871 however, some parting of the ways
appears to have occurred as a now 61 year-old Thomas is found lodging alone in Renfrew.
His 59 year-old wife Janet and remaining family are by this time living at Glebe Street.
The eldest daughter Margaret now aged 36 has evidently married to become Margaret Davanna
but there is no evidence of a husband in situ.
The remaining years for Thomas also suggest a sad period of decline as
by his death on the 20th November 1875 in the Abbey Poorhouse,
he is described as being a 'pauper' who had spent the previous 2 years
in a state of paralysis. Another inmate James Sproul was the Informant.
