Susan Ferrie Docherty (1841-1921)

Susan Ferrie Docherty's Descendants

Susan Ferrie, was born in Ireland in 1841 to James and Mary Coll Ferrie. She married John Docherty (1840-1921) who was described as a general labourer on the 24th November 1861 in Donegal.

The family moved to Dumbarton and were identified as living at 17 Henryshott in Cardross at the time of the 1881 Census. Susan and John had at least five children with their son John Docherty (1862-1916) being the direct ancestor of the later Docherty family described in this site.

In view of the relatively small population of Cardross of apparently only 632 individuals in 1881 (according to an online Gazetteer Entry for Cardross), it is a coincidence that another individual described on this site - Sarah Douglas Donald (1861-1903) who is a direct ancestor of the Hart's in this site, also lived in Cardross.

John's siblings are known to include

The 1881 Census also reveals that a James and Margaret Loag were visiting the family with their 2 year old daughter Jane. James Loag was a Shipyard Labourer and had also been born in Ireland.

Susan lived until the age of 80, passing away on the 28th March 1921 at 12 Henryshott in Dumbarton. The Informant was her son Daniel who was living in Alexandria. Her husband John was himself to pass away shortly after on the 3rd of July, with Daniel again performing the role of Informant.

Henryshott in Cardross was the name of a street of houses built by Peter Denny for his workers in the shipyard. The area was also known as "Little Dublin" due to the number fo Irish people who lived there. The houses were demolished during the 1960's.
