Susan Caldwell Hunter (1793-1875)
Susan Caldwell Hunter,
was the daughter of John Caldwell (1774-1859) and a lady apparently who married as a Shanks - we do not currently know her forename.
The family origins and Susan's birthplace are almost certainly in Kilbarchan. Her father John who lived to the age of 85, was a weaver in
Kilbarchan and appears to have lived his entire life there, with his final address recorded as Ewing Street in Kilbarchan.
Susan is the great grandmother (x4) of the site author Kevin Hart via his father's mother.
Susan married Alexander Hunter but at this point no details of the marriage have been located within parish records. Susan and Alexander
had at least two children together - Hugh Hunter who is described separately in this site and a son John.
Susan's husband Alexander was a shawl weaver, again almost certainly in Kilbarchan where the industry reached it's
peak towards the mid 19th century. To meet the demands of the times and avoid direct competition from the powerlooms of Paisley,
Kilbarchan changed mainly to Tartans which only required traditional handlooms. This diversification allowed the industry to be sustained
locally until the 1880's.
Susan lived until the age of 82, passing away on the 29th June 1875. By this time, Susan was living at 23 St James Street in Paisley with her
husband Alexander having predeceased her. Her son John who lived at 139 St James Road in Glasgow was the Informant.
