Patrick Kean (Circa 1790-tbc)

Patrick Kean's Descendants

Patrick Kean, was born in Ireland in about 1790. The name Kean as was recorded for Patrick and his family was also often known as Kane, particularly in Ireland. The lack of reliable parish records for the late 18th Century is likely to thwart efforts to further trace Patrick's Irish ancestors. Patrick is the great grandfather (X4) of site author Kevin Hart. It is likely but not fully confirmed, that Patrick's parents were Patrick and Sarah Conroy Kean.

The Kane's are the descendants of the Irish Gaelic sep of the Ó Cathain who were located in the Barony of Keenagh, in county Derry, they were also located in the Laggan area of east County Donegal. Prior to the plantation of Ulster, in the seventeenth century, the Kane's were known as "Lords of Keenagh" However after the plantation, the name was dispersed, and it's influence receeded. The name today, as Kane and O'Kane is ranked as the seventy second most numerous name in Ireland, with Ulster being the heaviest populated. County Derry and surrounding Counties is still the most favoured location, otherwise, the name is widely but thinly distributed.

Patrick married Margaret Anne Connolly in Ireland and as was common at the time, they left Ireland and relocated to Scotland, probably during the late 1830's. Patrick and Anne had numerous children together, including Catherine Kean Toole in 1838, who is the direct ancestor of the Docherty's described in this site.

It appears Patrick and his family were living 363 Garscube Road (Dobbie's Loan) in Port Dundas according to the 1851 Census Records. This area was extremely well known for it's Irish immigrant population through the mid-19th Century. As could be anticipated, the living conditions were extremely harsh even by the standards of the time in Glasgow. There are today many individuals worldwide seeking to trace Irish decendants from this area. Garscube Road also has persisting relevance due to the continuing interest in the works of Charles Rennie Mackintosh (7 June 1868 - 10 December 1928) who as a young man designed the Mackintosh Church on Garcube Road which today is the home of the Charles Rennie Mackintosh Society.

By the time of Patrick's daughter Catherine's marriage to Patrick Toole aged 22 years at Renton in 1860, Patrick who was recorded with the familiar and ubiquitous 'Labourer' term, had already passed away. Margaret however appears to have alive at this point. Neither Patrick or his wife's death certification are currently evident within Scottish records - checks have been made via Kane and Kean naming conventions.
