Patrick Durkin (1836-1883)
Patrick Durkin,
son of Thomas Durkin (tbc) and Agnes Goldie Durkin (1807-1877)
was born in 1836 in Ireland.
Patrick is the great grandfather (x3) of the the site author Kevin Hart via his father's
mother Agnes Brodie Hunter McGlinn Hart.
Patrick married Sarah Campbell and together they had at least 5 children,
Jessie Durkin Hunter (1874-1918), Christine Durkin McDougall, Agnes, Sarah and Mary Durkin O'Donnell. Patrick and
a 22 year old Sarah were already living together in Renfrewshire with their young family at the 1861 Census.
Unfortunately the recorded address detail is not legible. We can however ascertain that Sarah had conceived their youngest
child Agnes aged just 16.
By the 1881 Census, Patrick and Sarah were living with their family at 149 George Street in Paisley. This record
also usefully advises us that his wife Sarah was born in Kirkintilloch.
The record also identifies that Patrick's 2 young grandchildren George (aged 4) and Thomas Williamson (aged 2) via their
daughter Sarah are living with the family.
There are however no obvious marriage records to confirm that Sarah ever married a gentlemen Williamson and
indeed the birth records for the children record them as illegitimate.
Patrick worked as a dyer journeyman during his life and was living at 3 St James Street in Paisley, when he
sadly passed away at the young age of 47 years on the 24th March 1883 after suffering from bronchial pneumonia.
His daughter Sarah, by now married as O'Donnell was the Informant. She signed the register using X as her mark.
Patrick's wife Sarah lived until 1900 when she passed away aged 54 years following an apopletic fit which as a somewhat aged term,
would generally denote bleeding from a stroke.
