Michael Hannan (1866-1951)

Michael Hannan, son of Thomas Hannan, a railway worker (1838 - but alive in 1885) and Margaret Gallacher Hannan (1839-1877), was born in 1866 in Ballagan, Bonhill. Michael's father Thomas was born in County Sligo, Ireland to Michael Hannan (born 1802) and Catherine Bohaine. Michael's mother Margaret was born in Ballyshannon, County Donegal to James Gallacher and Susan Flannigan Gallacher.

Michael who was a printfield hand, which was a common Bonhill profession at the time, married Annie Anderson (1864-1912) on the 31st December 1885 in Alexandria. Of the couples's parents, only Thomas Hannan was still alive. Annie was born in Edinburgh to Peter and Anne Dougan Anderson.

Michael and Annie had at least 7 children together including John Anderson Hannan (1889-1947). Another son Michael (1902-1963) lived in Balloch and served as an Admiralty policeman. A few of the Hannan offspring also moved to the USA, with a Stephen Hannan (1908-1988) working as a building manager in New York.

At the 1891 Census, Michael and Annie were living at 205 Main Street in Bonhill. Michael was destined to live a long life in Bonhill, outliving Annie who sadly passed away from heart disease much earlier in 1912.

Michael passed away aged 84 years on 12th January 1951. His final address was 106 George Street Bonhill and the Informant was his grandson Bruce.
