Mary McKelvie Porter Docherty Hannan , daughter of Robert Porter (1888-1929) and Margaret Kerr Porter (1896-1984), was born on 31 October 1918 in Renfrew. Mary was the second eldest of 5 siblings, Robert, Margaret, Grace and William. Mary's older brother left Renfrew as a young man and sadly, despite sending a few letters home from England, was ultimately to become lost to the family.

After an initial period having gone into service at 14 years years old as was the custom for many young woman at the time, Mary's drive and intelligence ensured that she developed a long and successful career as a clerkess which included work at the famous India Tyres - India of Inchinnan building.

Mary married twice during her life, firstly to Andrew Townsley Docherty on 5 December 1938 in Renfrew from her address at the time also in Renfrew - 3 Orchard Street Renfrew. Mary and Andrew had 2 daughters together Margaret and Irene. Sadly, they were later to divorce on 24 January 1958 having drifted apart with Andrew having spent time overseas in Canada.

Mary served with the Wrens during the war and later under duress from her grandson (she rarely, if ever, gladly reminisced) recounted the dramatic and lethal scenes whilst serving as a Wren during the war in Clydebank. She herself sustained leg injuries from flying glass.

Mary subsequently married John "Jackie" Anderson Hannan on 18 March 1958 in the Renfrew Old Parish Church. They had apparently met playing Bridge with Jackie falsely believing himself to be a confirmed bachelor at the time. During their courtship, Jackie who worked as a gas engineer told Mary that he would be ascending a tall gas tower which although remote, was in the sightline of Mary's office the next day. Sure enough, Mary later spied a distant waving figure atop the tower.

Mary and John and their young family lived for many years at Pentland Crescent in Potterhill, Paisley. Their home was in fact the original site of the Paisley Golf Clubhouse before it relocated to it's current location on top of the Glennifer Braes during the early 1950's.

Mary lived a full and rewarding life with her siblings, daughters and many friends. Even in late retirement, Mary donated her time to charitable works and exercised regularly. After a period of illness, Mary passed away in a private Paisley Care Home on 28th July 2008.
