Mary Clelland Douglas Donald (1837-1910)
Mary Clelland
,
daughter of Andrew Clelland (1819-1892) and Helen Robertson Clelland (1817-1899) was born in 1837 in Hamilton.
Mary married John Douglas (1827-1886) and they appear to have lived the rest of their lives together in Hamilton. To this
point searches within statutory registers have not identified the marriage details although this could be due to
the marriage occurring before 1855 or perhaps that they married in Ireland as we know from the 1871 Census
that John Douglas was born in Ireland.
Mary and John had at least five children together according to the 1871 Census and the record of a son William Douglas
from Mary's death certificate, who also was to live in Hamilton at 24 Hope Street. Mary was living at 1 Back Row
in Hamilton in 1871.
Mary outlived John, passing away aged 73 years on the 20th March 1910 after suffering from influenza for 2 months.
Her final address was 5 Orchard Street in Hamilton.
According to Harry Lauder's biographer William Wallace, the Scottish
Entertainer Harry, who was described by Winston Churchill
as "Scotland's greatest ever ambassador", lived at 30 Orchard Street in Hamilton between 1891 and 1893 with his wife
Annie and their son John Currie who was born on 19th November 1891.
