Mary Buntin McKelvie (1810-1900)
Mary Buntin McKelvie,
daughter of Samuel Buntin and Mary Black Buntin,
was born in 1810 in Ireland. The name Buntin however may have been corrupted on official records from
the more common Irish name Bunting. Mary Buntin is the great grandmother (X4) of Kevin Hart the site author.
Spelling variations of the Buntin name include
Bunten, Bunton, Bunting, Buntain, Buntine, Bontine and Buntyne.
The name is first recorded in Peebleshire before the Norman Conquest
and the arrival of Duke William at Hastings in 1066 AD.
Branches of the family are known to have left Scotland and settled in
Maryland, Barbados and Bermuda.
Mary married William McKelvie, believed to be in Ireland and they had at least 2 children together, a daughter Mary and
a son Matthew, who was born in 1853. Matthew's life is detailed separately within this site.
Mary died aged 89 years following a stroke on the 1st of July 1900 whilst living at 61 High Street
in Renfrew. This was her daughter's Mary's home which she shared with a William McAlonan whom she had
married in Dalry, Ayrshire on the 27th August 1881. Her son Matthew was the Informant.
From the wider family history perspective, the registration of Mary's death provides a remarkable coincidence as on the same day,
an infant named Agnes Townsley, born to John and Jane Smith Townsley, died in Renfrew at 4 Croft Place.
The Townsley family are in fact the great (X2) grandparents of Kevin Hart, being the grandparents of Andrew Townsley Docherty, and are described separately in this site.
Mary McKelvie Porter Docherty Hannan and her first husband Andrew Townsley Docherty would surely have been unaware of
this ancestral correlation when they married in 1938.
