Margaret Whiteford Kerr Porter Curle (1896-1984)
Margaret Whiteford Kerr Porter Curle,
daughter of James Kerr (1874-1922) and Mary McKelvie Kerr (1875-1940),
was born on 1st March 1896 in Renfrew.
The 1911 Census lists Margaret's occupation as a weaver in a local mill.
She
married twice during her life, firstly to
Robert Porter on 28th December 1917 in Renfrew from her address in Renfrew. Robert was in fact her cousin who had been lodging with the Kerr family as a young man according to the 1911 census records. It is believed that her father James
Kerr was the brother of Robert's mother Anne Jane Porter. Interestingly, her sister Sarah McCormick Kerr married Robert's brother Hugh Porter.
With Robert dying in 1929, Margaret was later to marry again, to Robert Curle
who was originally from Glasgow. Margaret also had another child William out of wedlock with the father William McInnes who was
reportedly married at the time.
Margaret lived at 13 Wallace Road, Renfrew and this home also served for many years
as the extended family's New Year party venue, with "wee granny's" ginger wine and chocolate bombs,
a particular favourite.
