Jemima Young Baptiste (1923-1991)

Jemima Young Baptiste , daughter of Alexander Hill Baptiste (1901-1930) and Catherine Campbell Bradford Baptiste (1903-1982), was born on 14th October 1923 in Renfrew.

As a young girl, Jemima travelled to India and Burma with her parents. Her father Alexander worked in the Shipping Industry and travelled extensively in connection with his profession during the 1920's.

As was the case with her brother Charlie, Jemima was an entertainer, indeed, she was for a time, famous as "Takia the Hula Hula Girl" at the Glasgow Empire. It was during this time that she was approached by Felix Mendelssohn to be part of his new band "Felix Mendelssohn and his Hawaiian Serenaders" for the summer season at the Blackpool Opera House.

Jemima also released a solo record which was a version of "Summertime" under the name "Jimmy Young". As a young girl, Jemima's parents took her to India, presumably in connection with Alexander's job as a shipwright.

Jemima appears to married Christopher Dease in 1947 at Islington Middlesex. According to the English records, her Aunt Grace married a Lascelles Williams at the same timew whilst living in Kensington.

Jemima's grandson Steve Bannister lives in Australia and has been active on internet sites tracing his family roots. English and Welsh Records confirm that a Jemima Young Dease passed away in June 1991 - the birth date of 14th October 1923 matches the Jemima Young Baptiste noted in this site.
