Jemima Henrietta Baptiste (1886-1966)

Jemima Henrietta Baptiste, daughter of Charles Tobias Baptiste (1851-1918) and Jemima Young Baptiste (1860-1945) was born in Plantation Street Govan on the 17th April 1886.

Renfrewshire social sites have referred to a 'Mima' who was a sister of the well known Renfrew 'Queenie' being blind. It is therefore possible that Jemima was indeed blind although this presumably occurred later in life. On the 19th May 1905, a James Baptiste was born to an unmarried Jemima Baptiste who lived at 4 Bell Street in Renfrew. It appears almost certain that James was 'this' Jemima's son. Sadly, the child only lived for 2 months, succumbing to catarrh on the 2nd August 1905.

Jemima certainly went on to marry a Lawrence Finnie from Govan on the 18th December 1926 when she was 40 years of age and living at 3 Donaldson Drive in Renfrew. Lawrence who was a Mental Hospital Attendant was considerably older at 65 years of age.

Lawrence died only 7 years later in February 1937 but athough the Death Certificate notes Jemima as his wife, he was by this time living in Arbroath and the Informant 'Agnes' was descibed as an 'intimate' friend, presumably by herself. Jemima was listed within Census records as a cook.

Jemima passed away in 1966 in Renfrew.
