Isabella Algie Baptiste (1892-1983)
Isabella Algie Baptiste
,
daughter of Charles Tobias Baptiste (1851-1918) and Jemima Young Baptiste (1860-1945)
was born at 23 Plantation Street in Govan on the 14th March 1892.
The Plantation area was effectively demolished in the redevelopments of the 1960-70s.
Isabella was one of at least 10 children and worked when young as a clerkess. She married John Hannan Charles on 4th April 1919 at Yoker.
Isabella's sister Agnes Baptiste (1883-1968) witnessed the ceremony. Isabella was living at
Rhona Cottage in Bell Street at this time. Isabella appears to have
had a relatively comfortable upbringing presumably due to the fact that when she was born,
her father Charles apparently owned a restaurant in Glasgow in 1891. Later however he appears to
have reverted to the position of cook - he originally travelled to Scotland from Tobago as a ship's cook.
Isabella and John had a single child -
John Anderson Hannan who was born on the 30th May 1920.
Isabella was a keen church-goer and a gentle, refined lady. Isabella passed away aged 91 in 1983 in Renfrew.
