Hugh Hunter (1873-1948)

Hugh Hunter, son of Hugh Hunter (1825-1901) and Agnes Rintoul Hunter (1834-1903) was born on the 31st May 1873. His parents who had married on the 21st August 1860 in Paisley, were living at Causeyside Street Paisley at the time of Hugh's birth. Hugh Hunter is the great grandfather (x2) of the site author Kevin Hart.

Hugh married Jessie Durkin (1874-1918) on the 7th June 1898, with his address at this time being recorded as 6 Gauze Street in Paisley.

Hugh and Jessie had at least two children together, Christina Jeanie Hunter on the 21st February 1897 and Elizabeth who later married to be known as Lizzie Fairley. By the time of Christina's birth, Hugh and Jessie had apparently moved to live in Dundee. Hugh worked as a general labourer during his life.

Hugh was to live a comparatively long life, finally passing away on the 5th October 1948 at the age of 76. His wife Jessie had predeceased him, passing away aged just 43 years on the 4th August 1918 following a sad decline into insanity and associated paralysis. The Informant for Hugh's death was noted as his daughter Lizzie.

In the latter stages of his life, Hugh was living at Galloway Street in Paisley, having previously lived at Great Hamilton Street in Paisley. The somewhat grim Life in a Paisley tenement street in the first half of the 20th century has been well documented in the auto-biographical account "Galloway Street" by John Boyle.
