George Russell Hart (1878-1954)

George Russell Hart , son of John Hart (1851-1921) and Annie Russell Hart (1851-tbc), was born in 1878 in Paisley.

George lived at Numbers 5 and 7 Orchard Street Paisley with his parents when young. George married Mary Clelland Donald (1890-1935) on the 16th July 1909 in Hamilton, where Mary lived. George and his wife Mary were later recorded as living at 16 King Street in Paisley. The "Russell" in George's name derived from his grandfather on his mother's side - George Russell.

An architectural evaluation exercise conducted in July 2005 at 8 Orchard Street Paisley, identified remains of the Paisley Abbey Orchard dating from the middle ages, hence the street name.

By the 1740's, Orchard Street was one of the sites where Paisley Weaver's cottages were established, along with Shuttle Street, Sneddon, the Croft, Maxwellton, George Street, Canal Street, Causeyside and Neilston Road.

Today, a 4 storey tenement constructed in 1905-1906 by architect T G Abercrombie stands at Orchard Street. This building is of a fine construction and is a Category B listed building.

George worked as a ship plater's helper which involved assisting the crews to bolt iron plates onto the sides of the vessels. This was regarded as a relatively dangerous profession and was a career shared by the Scottish Football Manager Alex Ferguson's father - Alexander Beaton Ferguson. The shipyard where George worked is presently unknown.

As with the other Hart's noted in this site, George lived a relatively long life within the context of a Scottish male born in 1878, outliving his wife Mary who died in 1935, and eventually passing away on 4th September 1954. George's son John registered the death.
