Elizabeth Cherry Hart (1824-1869)

Elizabeth Cherry , daughter of William Cherry (tbc) and Agnes Cochran Cherry (1798-1863) was born in Paisley in 1824. Her parents were married at the High Church in Paisley on the 21st July 1811.

Elizabeth married Malcolm Hart (1826-1907) and they lived together at 13 Barr Street in Paisley. The Scottish singer Paulo Nutini's great grandparents John and Annie Feely were later to live at 12 Barr Street. By coincidence, the property at 12 Barr Street was owned at that time by a William John Charles who lived at Ashbourne Villa in Arkleston Road Paisley - almost directly opposite the home where the site author would live over 100 years later.

Elizabeth who was a warehouse worker, had been married previously to an Armstrong Munn who was a cloth manufacturer. Armstrong appears to have been an individual of comparative wealth and his son J.P Munn's death aged 62, was reported in the Sydney Morning Herald on the 6th September 1873. The Munn offspring emigrated to Merimbula in New South Wales and for a time enjoyed considerable business success producing 'Maizena' with the family owning most of the farms and settlements in Merimbula. When Matthew Munn's son Armstrong inherited the business in 1873 however, decline quickly followed and the family fortune was lost. To this day however, there remains a Munn Street and Munn Park in the area.

Elizabeth and Armstrong had at least one child together - Robert Armstrong Munn. Robert himself had married Margaret Rodger and he passed away on the 8th February 1886 at the age of 44 with his death being registered with the surname Hart which he presumably had adopted. He had lived latterly at 42 Canal Street in Paisley.

Malcolm Hart is also known to have married twice, firstly to Elizbeth and later to a Jane Wilson Smith.

At the time of the 1851 Census, Elizabeth and Malcolm were living at Dovesland which was a suburb in Abbey parish on the South side of Paisley with their daughter Elizabeth and 3 sons William, John and James. Paisley's Neilston Road is now on the site of Dovesland although apparently only a single building which is now a chip shop remains from the original area.

The death entry for Elizabeth is not fully legible but we can determine that Elizabeth was found dead at the age of 45 years on the 13th June 1869. It is possible that Elizabeth was found dead in the Paisley Canal. Elizabeth had latterly been living at Causeyside Street in Paisley.

Her husband Malcolm was to remarry and live until his 82nd year, passing away on the 24th August 1907. The death certificate noted that both Malcolm and his father John were housepainters. Their son John was the Informant.
