David Archibald Baptiste (1881-1913)

David Archibald Baptiste , son of Charles Tobias Baptiste (1851-1918) and Jemima Young Baptiste (1860-1945) was born in 1896 in Renfrew.

David was an apprentice blacksmith at the time of his untimely death due to a perforated duodenal ulcer aged just 16 years on the 13th September 1913. In the past, surgery was commonly needed to treat a duodenal ulcer. This was before it was discovered that H. pylori was the cause of most duodenal ulcers, and before modern acid-suppressing drugs became available. Surgery is now usually only needed if a complication of a duodenal ulcer develops such as severe bleeding or a perforation.
