Bridget Toole Docherty (1863-1927)

Bridget Toole Docherty, mother of Patrick Docherty (1884-1956) was born on the 18th December 1863 in Dumbarton. Bridget's parents were Patrick Toole (Circa 1840-tbc) and Catherine Kean Toole (1838-tbc) who had married on the 18th December 1860 in Renton.

Bridget married John on 20th September 1886 at the Alexandria Chapel, which was witnessed by Daniel and Mary Docherty. The 21 year old Bridget was living with her parents Patrick Toole (tbc) and Catherine Kean (or Kane) Toole (tbc) at Church Place in Renton at the time. The 23 year old John had been living at West Bridgend in Renton with his parents John Docherty and Susan Ferrie Docherty. Bridget was the only individual to sign her name as opposed to a X mark on the Marriage Register.

Bridget worked at the printfields in Renton as a young woman, as did most of the Vale of Leven workforce in Victorian times. John was described as a rivetter journeyman which would mean that he was an apprentice-served shipyard worker joining metal plates with hammered rivets.

John and Bridget had at least 5 children:



John died on the 19th December 1916 aged 53 years due to cancer. Rsther curiously, Bridget this time as the Informant, signed using only X as her mark. John's sister Susan who had married and moved to Homestead, Pennsylvania had herself died at a young age in 1904, albeit after having 8 children. Her descendants live in the US Homestead area to this day.

Bridget passed away after suffering from bronchitis on the 22nd of July 1927 in Dumbarton at the age of 62 years. She ended her days living at Levenford Terrace in Dumbarton. Her son Martin Docherty was the Informant.
