Andrew Townsley 1836-1899)

Andrew Townsley , son of Samuel Townsley (tbc) and Mary Gardner Townsley (tbc) was born in 1836 in Ireland. Andrew was Andrew Docherty's (1916-1966) great-grandfather via his mother's ancestors.

Andrew married Mary Docherty in Antrim, Ireland although the date has not been established to this point. It is believed that Andrew and Mary came to Scotland between 1871 and 1881 at a time when large numbers of Irish settled in Scotland and the Commonwealth.

Together they had at least 6 children, all of whom were born in Ireland apart from James and Sarah Townsley:

Andrew was a shipyard labourer, and hence shares a profession with many of this site's males during the 19th Century. At the 1881 Census, a 46 year old Andrew and his wife Mary were living at 106 Croft Place Renfrew. The Census records for this address also identify that a 22 year old Samuel Townsley was living nearby at 102 Croft Place, married to Helen. An examination of Scottish marriage records has confirmed that Samuel was their son who had in fact married Helen McGregor on the 12th November 1880 and that Andrew was only able to witness the Certificate via an 'X mark'.

Andrew and Mary also lived at 102 High Street in Renfrew but Mary was unfortunately to meet a rather disturbing demise - dying from exhaustion 3 days after suffering a cut throat on the 19th June 1882. The presence of Andrew as the Informant presumably excludes any hint of foul play. Their great-grandson Andrew was born at 80 High Street 32 years later.

Andrew appears to have remarried 3 years later to an Ann McCabe or Mary Carlyle. He passed away on the 28th March 1899 whilst living at 7 Croft Place in Renfrew.
