Alexander Hill Baptiste (1901-1930)

Alexander Hill Baptiste , son of Charles Tobias Baptiste (1851-1918) and Jemima Young Baptiste (1860-1945) was born on the 5th October 1901 at 3 East Croft Paisley. At the time there were North, South, East and West Croft streets in the St James area of Paisley - these streets disappeared early in the 20th century. Alexander was one of at least 10 siblings.

Alexander married Catherine Campbell Bradford (1903-1982) on the 17th March 1922 at which time he was employed as a Shipwright and living at Victory Gardens in Renfrew.

Alexander and Catherine had 2 children together Charles and Jemima Baptiste. Both of these offspring were to have eventful lives in the entertainment industry and are documented in this site. Information gleaned from a Steve Bannister in Australia who has been active on genealogy sites identifies that Alexander and Catherine travelled to India and Burma when their children were young in connection with Alexander's work in the ship building industry. Charles was apparently left at home with 3 aunts for his education with Jemima travelling with her parents. Jemima is known to have attended school in Burma as a young girl, remembering in later years having to row to school.

Alexander's brother Charles Tobias was also working in India and Burma during the late 1910-20's. This gentleman had a colourful life marrying a local 17 year old Mah Twai when 36 years and possibly fathering a daughter. Charles also married a Catherine in Burma and ultimately travelled home with her. This confusing series of events was unravelled by Steve Bannister (grandson of Jemima) who lived in Hemel Hempstead before moving to Sydney Australia.

Passenger records for the Jervis Bay Ship from 1929 indeed confirm that Alexander's brother Charles Baptiste was travelling to Hull from Brisbane Australia for arrival on 10th August 1929. With Charles were his 26 year old wife Catherine Baptiste and a 10 year old daughter Juanna Baptiste.

Alexander sadly died at the age of 28 on the 28th June 1930 due to heart disease. He had been working in Burma as late as 1929. His wife Catherine was the Informant. He had lived latterly at 40 Orchard Street in Renfrew.
