Agnes Rintoul Hunter (1834-1903)

Agnes Rintoul Hunter, daughter of Peter Rintoul and Mary Galbraith Rintoul was born in 1834. The location is currently unknown as no obvious parish records have been located. Of the 310 Rintoul families recorded at the 1841 Census, the highest concentration was in Perthshire, Midlothian and Fife, with over 200 families living in these areas as opposed to just 6 families in Renfrewshire. Records on the 1901 Census appear to suggest that Agnes was born in Kilbarchan however.

Agnes is the great grandmother (x3) of the site author Kevin Hart.

Agnes married Hugh Hunter on the 16th August 1861 aged 27 years. Hugh was somewhat older, being aged 37 years. They were both living at Hill Steet in Glasgow at this time. It appears that of their parents, only Hugh's mother Susan was still living by this time. Agnes signed the marriage register using X as her mark. Her sisters Elizabeth and Christina witnessed the ceremony.

Agnes worked as embroiderer early in her life and we know of at least 4 children, Hugh and Peter, a daughter and a son James who she conceived at the relatively advanced age of 38. We know from the birth records for their son Hugh who was born in 1873, that Hugh and Agnes moved back to live in Paisley.

The 1901 Census finds a 61 year old Agnes living at 38 George Street in Paisley with her 23 year old son James. Agnes and her son are noted as being grocer shopkeepers.

Agnes lived until 1903, passing away aged 63 due to a tumour of the abdomen, 2 years after Hugh who died aged 78 on on the 29th June 1901. Agnes lived latterly at 14 Glen Street in Paisley. The Informant for Agnes's death was noted as her son-in-law William Reid who lived nearby at 28 Glen Street.
